Diwali is India's most important and largest holiday. It is a 5 day festival of lights celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains. During the 5 day festival, cities and homes are decorated with oil lamps to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. Families also create design patterns called "rangoli" on the floor using colored sand or powders. These designs are passed down from generation to generation to represent strength and generosity. It is also said to bring good luck.
