WHO IS OGUN?
OGUN LAKAAYE; THE PRINCIPLE OF TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT THAT MANIFEST AS ORISA.
“Ogun is never an iron, but iron is a symbolic representation and manifestation of his strength, skills, and power.”---Yusuf Adetola Kareem (2019)
The above quote qualitatively captured the primacy essence of this write-up, is the fact that the world is run on principles termed the law of nature and law of spirituality, which will never negate each other, and anything that works on it works on principles. Ogun lifestyle cannot be an exemption in its imitation.
Ogun means different things to different people at different levels of life and spiritual understanding. To the Christian and Moslem, Ogun is an idol that is being worshiped by the traditionalist. But to the traditionalist, “Ogun is a deity of valor, creativity, energy, industry, hunting, and warfare” Oluwo Jogbodo Orunmila (2019). Ogun is seen by the Yoruba as the progenitor of hunters, farmers, blacksmith, and allied professions. Hence, he is referenced by all that deals with Iron/metallic substance.
Ogun lives in the era that relied on crude implements for economic activities, while we are in the modern world that relied on Technologies; a product of metal fabrication. Regarding Ogun as a deity of valor, creativity, energy, and industry, connotes more than being an object of worship, but a metaphoric message that any nation that explores her iron resources in alignment with human resources will be technologically advanced, strong in military hardware, with spin-off effect on all other sectors of the national economy.
Ogun is never an iron, but iron is a symbolic representation of the principle it stands for. The panegyrics of Ogun is full of silent, but loud metaphoric messages to the discerning ones. This is because, if any nation is endowed with iron and such a nation effectively and effectively put it to use, such a nation glory will radiate the world in different spheres of life (Lakaaye).
He had succeeded in teaching us how ironworks, and how it can be dynamically explored for our development. In those days, when Iron can only be fabricated to produce cutlass that can either be used to cut grass in the farm or make a pathway, Ogun was said to have two cutlass, in which he uses one for making pathway, and the other for farming. (Ogun alada meji, ofi okan sanko, ofi okan yena). Now that we are in the world of advance science and technology, the principle that Ogun stands for can be used to fabricate modern technologies that will aid our Agricultural development and road construction for the emergence of modern town and cities.
The panegyrics of Ogun also make us realized that the Fabrication of diverse categories of technologies requires a high degree of fire to manifest (Aso ina lomu bora), but this technology will take human life at different point by spilling their blood on the earth and itself (Olomi nile fi eje we), yet, it will be a pathway to economic and financial prosperity to an individual or nations that takes Ogun beyond an object of worship but development philosophical principles( Ogun Olona ola)
In conclusion, Africans ancestors had left us with an ancient landmark, but we must endeavor to build upon that landmark with creativity and effective use of STEM for human advancement, and takes Ogun beyond a deity of worship, but a platform for the black man and Africa re-emergence to global competitiveness and relevance.
